Wolverine Human Services is a social service agency providing safety, sustenance, and nurturing and therapeutic intervention to children. Wolverine’s programs focus on adolescents suffering from the social injustices of abuse and neglect and those involved in delinquent activities. Our mission is to offer the most appropriate settings and most effective services to children, their families and their communities. Our purpose is to take part in a mutual effort, assisting those in need to overcome social and economic barriers, to capitalize on their personal strengths, and to contribute to their own healing. Our approach is eclectic and is founded on the premise of “unconditional” care. Wolverine’s continuum of services and effective network of referral sources provide a responsive and cost-effective system accessible at the community level. We continue to use new treatment approaches, expand our services, reach out to collaborate with other service providers and utilize input from our many clients, constituents, funders and supporters.

Wolverine has been the fastest growing child care agency in the state of Michigan. St. Jude’s Home for Boys, a 40 bed facility for males, opened February 4, 1987. In January 1988, Wolverine opened the Wolverine Diagnostic, Assessment and Treatment Center, which now houses 20, 6-18 year old males in need of emergency shelter care and the Wolverine Sexually Reactive Program, a 14 bed intensive treatment program for cognitively impaired sexually reactive males. The Wolverine Diagnostic, Assessment and Treatment Center is also located on the East Side of Detroit. In September, 1988, Wolverine opened three programs: Victors Center, Pioneer Work and Learn Center (PWLC) and Community Case Management Services (CCMS). Victors Center is a 42 bed group facility which houses cognitively impaired, adolescent males is located on the East Side of Detroit. Pioneer Work and Learn Centers located in Vassar, MI, houses 216 adolescent males in three separate and distinct programs. Community Case Management Services offers Foster Care services, Specialized Independent Living services and Family First of Michigan programming.

In 1991, Wolverine opened the Wolverine Community Center and Soup Kitchen, now named the John S. Vitale Center in honor of its late center director. The center provides after school activities for neighborhood youth and hot meals for those in need. The Wolverine Specialized Day Treatment program, a co-ed program for Wayne County juvenile justice youth is also located at the Community Center. In 1997, Wolverine opened up the Wolverine Secure Treatment Center (WSTC) in Buena Vista Township which houses 80 adolescent males in need of secure residential treatment for serious delinquent offenses. In 1998, the Clarence Fischer Leadership Academy (CFLA) opened in Vassar on property adjacent to the Pioneer programs. CFLA, which houses 72 adolescent males, is a military leadership academy designed to instill self-discipline, structure and physical fitness.
